Each year, the top vote-getter in each of the 17 categories becomes a lifelong member of Business North Carolina's “Legal Elite” Hall of Fame. Harper Heckman received the honor for Construction in 2016 and Eric Mills for Intellectual Property in 2012.
Created in 2002, Business North Carolina's Legal Elite celebrates North Carolina's top lawyers across various business-related categories. Each year, the BNC distributes a ballot notice to every member of the NC State Bar who currently resides in North Carolina to conduct a peer review. The ballot asks lawyers to identify an attorney's work they observed firsthand that they believe to be the current best in the listed categories. The BNC's Legal Elite has become a model for other awards, but it remains the only one that allows every active lawyer in the state to participate.
