Overview
Ricky Parker practices in the Firm’s Intellectual Property practice group as a registered patent attorney. His practice focuses on all aspects of intellectual property including preparing and prosecuting patent applications in various technologies. With vast experience with computer software, mechanical devices, and medical devices, Ricky is capable of obtaining patent protection across many disciplines based on the need of the client.
A large portion of Ricky’s practice is directed to computer software patent applications and specifically to avoiding and overcoming issues relating to patentable subject matter under 35 U.S.C. § 101. His experience includes working with fintech clients focused on improving patent portfolio size and quality. The combined experience in computer software and mechanical devices also allows Ricky to assist clients engaged in advanced manufacturing that includes automated processes.
With clients ranging from start-ups and solo inventors to the largest companies in the world, Ricky understands that IP is not one size fits all. From assisting a start-up obtain a first patent to helping to shape an IP portfolio for a large company, Ricky understands that each client requires an IP plan tailored specifically for the client. Ricky’s practice includes all aspects of IP, including patent preparation and prosecution, IP diligence, litigation, and foreign filings.
Ricky holds a J.D. from the University of North Carolina School of Law. Throughout law school, he served as the President of the Carolina Intellectual Property Legal Association and an Articles Editor for the North Carolina Journal of Law & Technology. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude, from North Carolina State University.
Outside Maynard Nexsen
Beyond the office, Ricky is an avid sports fan including college sports (NC State), football (Carolina Panthers), baseball (Atlanta Braves), and NASCAR. Ricky also dabbles in auto racing in the form of short track asphalt late model racing and is always up for a conversation about racing.

Ricky was honored with the Patent Pro Bono Achievement Certificate by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2019 and 2020, as well as being honored as a North Carolina Bono Honor Society member in 2019 and 2020.
