Overview
Sabrina is Of Counsel in Maynard Nexsen’s Health Care and Labor & Employment practice groups.
Sabrina’s diverse litigation background has allowed her to successfully represent clients in employment matters in a variety of industries including, but not limited to retail, health care, life sciences, digital health, start-ups, hospitality, finance, and education.
In addition, Sabrina has extensive experience supporting, counseling and representing health care clients (e.g. hospitals, medical staffs, academic medical centers, medical groups, health plans, clinics, and life sciences companies) in both pre-suit disputes and claims in arbitration, state and federal court. Her knowledge and experience has helped health care clients navigate the complex overlap between employment laws and health care laws governing health care entities and providers. Specifically, Sabrina has handled matters involving:
- Medical Residency Terminations: Sabrina is familiar with the unique hybrid employee-physician status of medical residents, how residency programs operate and the requirements to successfully complete such programs, including satisfying USLME and ACGME milestones. Sabrina has represented and counseled medical residency programs in lawsuits alleging wrongful termination, discrimination and retaliation. She has experience with the special due process requirements mandating GME program hearings, as well as any subsequent judicial review.
- Medical Staff Counseling and Peer Review: Sabrina has represented medical staffs, hospitals and health systems in medical staff peer review issues, including subsequent litigation. She provides counseling for decisions to remediate, suspend or terminate providers, as well as provider credentialing, re-credentialing and the filing of Business and Professions Code Section 805 and National Practitioner Data Bank reports.
- Medical Provider Networks: Sabrina has experience representing and counseling health care clients in provider selection and removal disputes. She also advises clients concerning quality assurance, credentialing and general risk management issues and helps health care clients develop and revise internal policies to help avoid litigation exposure.
- Operational and Regulatory Counseling: Sabrina has assisted major health plans revise policies in relation to licensing, leave, peer review and the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, she has advised clients with respect to consent and operational issues.
- Miscellaneous: Sabrina also has experience with the various medical licensing boards, responding to licensing board subpoenas, special requirements to FOIA information from federal health agencies, retaliation claims under Health and Safety Code section 1278.5, and Strategic Lawsuit Against Public Participation (Anti-SLAPP) suits.
Sabrina holds a J.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, where she served as Co-Editor-in-Chief of the UCLA Women’s Law Journal. She earned an M.P.P. in Health Policy and Nonprofit Management from the University of Minnesota Humphrey School of Public Affairs and a B.A. in Legal Studies and Public Policy from the University of California, Berkeley.
