Overview

Matt’s practice focuses on financial services litigation, including the defense of financial institutions and insurance companies in both complex civil litigation and arbitration. Matt has extensive experience in securities litigation, defending broker-dealers and other financial institutions in a wide range of litigation both in FINRA and Federal Court, including suitability claims, contract disputes, breach of fiduciary duty allegations, sales practice violations, options trading, and third-party lien matters.

Alongside his financial services practice, Matt also works in the insurance field. Since 2016, Matt has served as counsel for the bellwether defendant in In re Blue Cross and Blue Shield Antitrust Litigation, one of the largest MDLs in the world, which was filed in 2012 and remains pending today. He has also represented third-party administrators, plans, plan administrators, and employers in ERISA and non-ERISA benefit claim disputes brought by participants and beneficiaries of life, health, disability, and accidental death and dismemberment plans.

Beyond his experience handling cases throughout the litigation process, he is also proficient in pre-dispute resolution, often avoiding the need for costly litigation through informal settlement discussions or mediation.

Prior to law school, Matt worked in behavioral neuroscience research, focusing on statistical analysis of longitudinal fMRI results. Matt’s science background has helped him develop aptitude in the analysis of complex financial data and large-scale e-discovery. Matt has extensive experience in the management of e-discovery projects, including designing review protocols and training and supervising discovery teams.

Matt received a B.S. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, magna cum laude, and a J.D. from the University of Alabama School of Law.
