Overview
M.V. is a Shareholder in the firm’s Trusts, Estates, Fiduciaries & Family Business practice group where he counsels clients on estate and wealth preservation planning, business succession planning, day-to-day general counsel services for family and closely-held businesses, and entity formations and ongoing governance issues.
In his estate planning practice, M.V. guides families and individuals through sophisticated wealth transfer planning, federal gift and estate taxation issues, and estate and trust administration matters. By crafting sophisticated estate plans for his clients, M.V. helps them preserve their family wealth, and protect their family values, business interests, and other important assets. M.V. has broad experience preparing wills, revocable trusts, intentionally defective grantor trusts, generation skipping transfer (GST) trusts, spousal lifetime assess trusts (SLATs), life insurance trusts, special needs trusts, various charitable trusts, and other estate planning documents, including powers of attorney and health care directives. He also has experience advising executors and beneficiaries of estates with regard to the probate administration process.
In his business planning practice, M.V serves as a trusted advisor to family-owned and closely held companies and their owners, advising them on timely business succession and exit planning strategies in addition to day-to-day management and ongoing governance and operational issues. He has broad experience advising on shareholders agreements, buy-sell agreements, lifetime gifting, life insurance planning, and management and ownership transition matters. He is also versed in entity formations, including limited liability companies, corporations, and family limited partnerships. M.V. serves as an outside general counsel to a number of closely-held and family-owned businesses, functioning as a trusted advisor to those clients and helping them navigate the legal aspects of their businesses.
M.V. graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude from Auburn University with a B.S. in Economics and a minor in Spanish. He earned his J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law, where he was a scholarship recipient and the articles editor of the Virginia Law & Business Review. Prior to attending law school, M.V. served for three years on the Washington, D.C. personal office and appropriations committee staff of former United States Senator Richard C. Shelby of Alabama.
