Overview
Clay Williams is Of Counsel in the firm’s Insurance Practice Group. His practice focuses on ERISA and group insurance litigation, including group insurance claims, pension claims, breaches of fiduciary duty, and compliance issues, as well as managed care litigation, insurance coverage, and bad faith claims. Clay has 25 years of experience representing individuals and small businesses in state and federal courts. He approaches each case with diligence and a strategic mindset aimed at achieving favorable outcomes for his clients.
Before joining Maynard Nexsen, Clay served as a Senior Attorney at a Birmingham-based ERISA litigation firm, where he gained extensive experience handling complex ERISA claims. He also previously served as a law clerk to Justice Hugh Alva Maddox of the Alabama Supreme Court and staff attorney to Justice Jean Brown before entering private practice in 2001.
Clay earned his J.D. from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, where he graduated cum laude and was inducted into the Curia Honoris society. During law school, Clay served as the Executive Editor of the American Journal of Trial Advocacy, a Legal Research & Writing Teaching Fellow, and on the Moot Court Board while competing on behalf of Cumberland as part of its ABA National Moot Court Team. Clay holds a Master of Accountancy and a Bachelor of Science in Accounting from Auburn University.
