Lee Holmes quoted in Bloomberg Law on Judicial Backlog
Maynard Nexsen shareholder Lee Holmes was quoted in Bloomberg Law’s article, “Senate Clears Judicial Backlog as Nomination Pipeline Drying Up.” The Senate has recently accelerated confirmations of President Trump’s judicial nominees, approving five district court selections this week and advancing votes for additional nominees in Tennessee and Indiana. But while confirmations are picking up, the larger story may be what’s happening behind the scenes: the nomination pipeline is thinning.
Excerpts:
"The White House needs two things to be able to nominate district judges: vacancies and blue slips. More than any other factor, these determine the pace of confirmations," said Lee Holmes, former chief counsel and staff director of the Senate Judiciary Committee under former Chair Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.).
"To sitting conservative district judges and Republican senators: your window of assured confirmation of a conservative is rapidly closing," said Holmes, who's now managing shareholder of Maynard Nexsen D.C. "There is no guarantee Republicans will control the Senate next Congress, and even if they do, they may not enjoy a three-vote majority."
